Literature Text

France, fall of 1850; a young man obsessed with the wonders of the sea, strolled along the decks by the ocean, early in the morning that boats men still slept or took their boats out for a nice catch of fish for lunch. He was alone with fog rolling in around his bundled form. The young man wore a gray wool coat, black trousers, and worn out black-leathered shoes. Walking to the edge of the docks, he watched the waves steadily move towards him, as the beacon of the lighthouse crossed through the thick rolling fog. The smell of fresh fish and the salt of the deepened mass of water pleased the man greatly, taking a deep breath as a smile formed on his face.
Off in the distance, far past the docks the man stood on, came a wailing tune; similar to the song of a dolphin. Smiling in wonderment, the man whipped his head towards the sound, listening contently. The sound echoed loudly in his head; pulling, taunting him to it. The man could not resist this glorious song. He ran towards the sound, which was on the beach, near a cluster of black rocks. Peering into the ocean that caressed their pointed stiff forms; like a lover’s touch to their stubborn cold woman, who dares not touch them back.
As the man ran towards the rocks; black shoes filled with sand as he sank within it. The song kept leering him closer; mind black and blurred of any thought other than the hypnotizing song. Soon he was knee-deep in the tide, standing at the start of the black rocks, which loomed shadows over him. Looking up at the shortest rock, there was the creature that leered the man closer with its glorious song.
The creature was none of a dolphin; trapped along the black stone, nor a seagull perched; waiting for the sea to wash up his breakfast. The creature was of a woman, with a fishtail to replace flawless legs with smooth light skin of a woman. She was a mermaid; but none of the normal that humans portray.
Her hair was to the crook of her back, black and matted with weeds and crab shells. Skin gray and sleek like a sharks, but instead of freckles down her pâté arms and cheeks, were shinny blue and yellow scales. The tail frayed out like a lionfish’s form. Her teeth sharp like sharks, black lips and eyes to finish her perfection.
The man gazed up at the fish woman with wonderment; finding her the most beautiful woman of this whole planet. It was love at for the man.
“Ma’am, goddess of the sea, may I ask your name?” he spoke to flatter her.
The mermaid giggled with a shy turn of her head, acting flattered by the man, when truthfully it was just to lead him on; put on a show. But she did not speak her name.
“Please, I must know the name of this beautiful, breath taking, creature before me,” he stepped closer to the rock, reaching up to her to stroke her tail.
She whipped her tail away from him, with a playful chuckle. “Good sia, my name is Requin; daughta of Aquainess.”
He smiled wide, sighing in bliss as he whispered her name shortly after to himself. “My name is William,” he bowed before her. “Ma’am Requin, I find you the most ravishing woman I’ve ever seen. I’d love to take you as my beloved wife and cherish you always.”
Chuckling with mockery and a devilish twisting grin full of sharp teeth, she whipped her tail down, slapping the rock as a threat. “Me marry a foolish, pitiful, human like you? Ha, I would neva! AS you find me ravishing, I find you disgusting! I’d neva bear the children of a human’s. You lusting man, you aren’t worth my time,” Requin dove off the rock, creating a big enough splash to get the man wet with dirty seawater.
William stood wide-eyed at the rock with no more Requin upon it. He ignored her rude words to him; because despite what she said, he so badly wanted her all to himself make Requin his beloved wife.

William spent two whole years to find his beloved Requin of the sea. Fishing with hooks and nets to hope and find her, but found more fish and whales than a mermaid. However, from his hunt he became rich along the cost lines of France. He sold millions of fish, crab, and shrimp he caught, along with many different whales and prized sharks. But no Requin, who was his true fortune. Until one cold  day at sea, he caught his prize shark; Requin his wife. Tangled in a net with a hook caught in her cheek, she squirmed and fought violently to break lose.
“Requin! My beloved! Oh, how beautiful you still remain. Oh my wife, let me tend to your wounds,” William pulled her on his ship, cutting loose the net and freeing her. Her cheek bloody and torn, Requin hissed and pulled away when he touched it. Requin couldn’t speak, but she made pained wails and cries.
“Hold still my heart!” William pulled her in his arms, working the hook carefully from her cheek. Once done, he stitched her up with fishing line, as gentle and kind as he could, washing off the blood shortly after done. “Beautiful Requin, I am sorry I brought you harm. I’ll bring you no more harm, my love.”
Once back on land in France, he hid his mermaid in his home, kept save in his tub. The water high and warm, which Requin found slightly comforting, but was too outraged to care. She screamed, throwing a fit all the way to his home, and did not cease to stop.
“You bloody fool! How could you steal me from my watas?! So you say you love me, yet you disrespect me! How heartless a man you are. Selfish man! No woman or fish should love you William. My fatha Aquaniss will bring great harm to you!” Requin splashed, sobbed, and screamed in anguish.
Bowing to the edge of the tub, reaching to her arms, stroking down them and holding her close to comfort his mermaid. “Oh Requin please calm down! I meant you no harm. I want to just show you I love you. I truly do, Requin, give me a chance!”
Requin sobbed in her webbed hands. “Leave me alone William!” she sobbed loudly, but he did not show any action of leaving. She hissed at William and violently splashed at him. “Leave!” she screamed.
With that, he staggered out. Requin sobbed in anguish, and would sometimes splash and scream in rage, until she wore herself to sleep.

William kept her in his home for sixth months now. Feeding her raw fish everyday and changing out her water. He checked on her everyday during his work breaks, trying to spend as much time as he could with his beautiful Requin. However he took good care of her, she was beginning to die and fell very ill. Her scales began to fall off and the color in her skin and tail faded unhealthily. William noticed this, but he ignored the thoughts of his beloved Requin dying.
One night after work, he held Requin’s hand as she looked at her worse. He bowed his head, and shed a few tears. “Requin, sweetheart, I am so horribly sorry.”
Requin sighed weakly and squeezed his hand. “William, my care taka, listen to me,” Requin forced her body up and lifted his head up to gaze into her black filmed blind eyes. “You’ve done me no good. You’ve made me sick, blind, and depressed, sia. My fatha Aquainess will notice I’m gone, and cause a great ‘n powerful earthquake on France. If you don’t return me, to my sea, the worse will come. If you return me, I will never see you ever again.”
William bowed his head and thought deeply about his outcomes. Either one was pleasing; he didn’t want to let his love go, but didn’t want her to die either. He leaned over to her head and kissed her on top of her head, stroking through her hair that brushed through everyday. “Okay, I’ll give you back.”
After returning her to the sea, William lived on his daily life without his love. Requin got better and regained her color, scales, and eye sight, now living among the rest of her sister’s and brother’s. William however always returned to the spot he first met Requin. Listening and looking for her, even though she said she wouldn’t return. But secretly, Requin missed William’s warm touch and cae, and so she would sing for him, every time he looked for her.
This is the sequel to my short story "Vibrations in the Ground" ==> [link]
Yes, I keep spelling Aquainess differently in both stories....It's a hard name to remember, k? :/ Don't judge. But I do hope you all enjoy! :D
